HAIR & MAKEUP

HAIR

Hair must be neat, secure, and styled off the face. Hairstyles should be appropriate for performance and able to stay in place throughout rehearsals and performances.

Hair should be:

• Brushed neatly with no loose strands falling into the face

• Secured with appropriate hair ties, bobby pins, and hairspray/gel if required.

• Styled before arriving at the venue unless otherwise advised.

Examples of suitable hairstyles include:

High ponytail, High pigtails, Ballet bun, Double buns, Braided ponytail, Braided pigtails, French braids, Dutch braids

The goal is for every dancer to look uniform, polished, and stage-ready while ensuring hair does not distract from the performance or obstruct the dancer's vision.

If specific hair requirements apply to a particular routine, these will be communicated prior to the performance.

MAKEUP

Stage lighting can wash out facial features, so performance makeup is required for all Performance students unless otherwise instructed.

Examples of performance-ready makeup include:

• Light foundation/tinted moisturiser appropriate for the dancer's age

• Blush to add colour to the cheeks

• Defined eyebrows

• Neutral eyeshadow shades

• Black winged eyeliner or defined eyeliner

• Red lipstick or a bold stage-appropriate lip colour

• Setting spray or powder to ensure makeup lasts throughout the performance

The goal is for facial expressions and features to be clearly visible from the audience while maintaining a clean, polished, and professional stage appearance.

If specific makeup requirements apply to a particular routine, these will be communicated prior to the performance.

*If your child is allergic to make-up, please let us know in advance

Arrive Early.

We'll send a call time ahead of each comp — please stick to it!

It gives us time to get everyone ready, calm any nerves, and do a little warm-up together before it's showtime.

Come dressed and ready.

Your dancer should arrive in full costume with hair and makeup done (see above).

Bring a warm layer or tracksuit to go over the costume until it's time to perform.

Teachers take it from here.

Once we arrive, your dancer will be with their teacher in the backstage or prep area.

Parents cheer from the audience — which is the best seat in the house!

Cheer loud, love louder.

These little ones work so hard to get on that stage.

Whether it's their first time or they're old pros, your energy from the audience means everything to them.

Photos and video.

Each competition has its own rules around photography — we'll always let you know what's allowed.

Generally, professional photos are available to purchase from the event,

and we encourage families to capture the moments they can.

Keep it fun.

At this age, it's all about the experience.

We celebrate every single performance regardless of result — these kids are already winners just for getting up there.

Thinking about solos?

Adding a solo to your dancer's year is one of the best decisions you can make for their growth —

and we'd love to have more little stars in our 6U solo squad.

A solo is your child's own moment in the spotlight — a routine choreographed just for them, performed at competitions throughout the year. It's a brilliant opportunity to develop skills beyond what a group class alone can offer: stronger technique, sharper performance quality, and the kind of confidence that only comes from owning a stage all by yourself. For dancers in this age group, it's also just really, really fun.

Accelerated growth

One-on-one attention means your dancer progresses faster and builds skills that lift their group performance too.

Stage confidence

There's nothing like performing solo to build real, lasting confidence — on stage and off.

Their own journey

Watch them grow through the year as their routine gets stronger, sharper, and more them with every performance.

A routine made for them

Choreographed to suit your child's personality, strengths, and style — not a one-size-fits-all approach.

If your child is interested in a solo, or want more information, please don't hesitate to message us.

FAQs

Do we need to buy the costume?

There is no option to purchase costumes — costumes are provided as part of the Perform program. More details will be sent out ahead of costume fittings.

What shoes does my dancer need?

Your teacher will let you know the specific footwear required for your dancer's routine. This will be confirmed early in the year.

What if my child is nervous about competing?

Totally normal — and honestly, so are the teachers! We spend a lot of time preparing your dancer so they feel confident and safe. We always focus on the fun and the experience, not the result.

Can siblings and extended family come to watch?

Absolutely! Competitions are open events — the more supporters cheering, the better. We'll share all ticketing or entry information closer to each event.

How do I stay up to date through the year?

Keep an eye on your emails from EPA, follow us on Facebook and Instagram, and check back on this page — we'll keep it updated throughout the year!
